Robot Rangers - All About Them

Posted by SomeNick Jan. 10, 2008 @ 10:18 PM EST

No doubt that a lot of people has already seen the thread title Wade Banned the Robot Rangers.

No doubt that a lot of people already saw plenty of garbage flashes submitted by the Robot Rangers, as well.

And no doubt that a lot of people already know that the Robot Rangers are gone.

Here is the story of the Robot Rangers, from start to end. I am the person who created the Robot Rangers flash crew. But most remarkably, I was pretty much its sole member, using a ton of different alts, now gone, now deleted. Sure, every now and then some people tagged along and contributed some flashes inspired in the Robot Rangers, but 99% of the time, it was me, alone.

I signed up in August 28, 2005, to submit one of the earliest Astroseries games (now not even officially part of the collection anymore). It was the first flash I submitted to the portal, ever. And it passed, with a score of 2.34. Despite that, I received a lot of bad reviews, and I mean a LOT. A good deal of these reviews came from people in the Clock Crew, and one of the poster was even Piconjo! Except that I found out later he wasn't Piconjo, just some alt. But I didn't know it back then. I pretty much decided to leave the portal alone.

Around September 2005, one day I was in college, in a particularly boring class, and I was drawing some robots in a piece of paper. Later on that day, when I came back home, I had nothing to do. So I began surfing Newgrounds, and saw some awful flashes, and even some parodies about awful flashes. I had decided to make my own awful flash, called "Robot Crew" (with some of the bad robots I had drawn in class), and submitted it to the portal. It was immediately blammed, but I kinda decided to fool around some more with it, and submitted some other flashes, also very awful.

Before long, I decided to make fun of the Clock Crew, LegendaryFrog, Piconjo, and so on. I decided that my "crew" needed a double lettered name, and thus, "Robot Rangers" was born in October 24, 2005. Even created a website and everything. Clock Crew members were mocking these "bad RR flashes that ALWAYS got blammed". I decided I needed one flash to pass, and it was to be a game. It was the first "Robot Rangers versus Clock Crew" game to ever appear, featuring Mazinger Z music and everything (when small, my older brothers used to see Mazinger Z a lot on TV, in the early 80s). It had passed wth a score of 2.17

But to be honest, what motivated me to create the Robot Rangers was, in fact, the desire to follow in the footsteps of the better known Newgrounds.com figures, such as LegendaryFrog, Piconjo, IllWillPress, and StrawberryClock. I wasn't sure what the formula to do so would be, and I'm affraid that I resorted to submitting spam flashes, purely and simple.

More RR flashes were submitted to the portal, featuring any amount of different subjects, mostly mocking the Clock Crew, but soon taking it against other people. All of the "Robot Rangers" users in Newgrounds were my alternate accounts.

Things changed a bit towards the end of 2006 and a good deal of year 2007, because the crew ACTUALLY had some members, in our BBS. They submitted some flash collabs modelled after a collab I had created myself. I handed them the .fla source file, with one minigame, and 5 collabs, which they modded to their tastes. Some RR flashes that were sent during that period were actually NOT created by me (though I had created the base code). However, they weren't that many flashes either, and it turned out that some of these members were in reality in the Kitty Krew, and were just having some fun, and others were well known spammers on their own. By the middle of 2007, the Robot Rangers flash crew was pretty much dead, everyone pursued their own goals.

December 2007 proved to be a very boring holiday for me, due to a variety of reasons. Since I had plenty of time to spend, I decided t submit some random RR flashes every now and then to the portal.

Year 2008 arrived, and I wanted to have some real fun. I created around 32 alternate accounts, and decided to mass review some of my flashes with straight 10s, getting the first Underdog of 2008. Then that week I had submitted two other RR flashes, and did the same, getting Review Crew Pick and Underdog once again the next week (January 9, 2008).

And thats where the Administration team and Moderation team jumped in. They blammed pretty much all of the RR flashes, and all alt accounts. When the thread mentioned at the beginning first appeared, Wade Fulp decided to investigate further, and found out that this was my main account, as mentioned in the thread. Via private messages, he told me that what I did was against the rules of the Newgrounds.com website. This is when I decided to speak out, and to put Robot Rangers to sleep, for good.

I told Wade Fulp I would not do any of this again. And I mean it. All of the Robot Rangers deal was pretty much a joke, and I never intended to disrupt Newgrounds.com in any way, but with all of these incidents, I realized I had pulled the bar too far when I forced the winning of the awards to my side. I decided to stop. And I will. From now on, I will continue working on my not-spammy flashes, and will do my best to submit quality work to the portal.

A lot of people will probably still flame me.

RIP Robot Rangers (September 5, 2005 - January 10, 2008)
